IVF Reproductive Health
The procedure of fertilizing an egg outside of the body by sperm is known as in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
The procedure entails observing a woman's ovulatory cycle, extracting an egg or eggs (Ova) from her ovaries, allowing sperm to fertilize them in a lab setting using a fluid medium, and then transferring the fertilization product to the patient's uterus in the hopes of generating a viable pregnancy.
The reasons causing infertility include: Male relate, Female related or combined.
- Male Related
- Low sperm counts/quality
- Testicular causes
- Mechanical causes
- Hormonal Causes
- Female related
- Advanced Age
- Endometriosis
- Tubal Blockage
- Diseases of the ovary- polycystic ovaries
- Combined
- Subfertility in both
- Immunological- antibodies against sperms
Sometimes the causes for infertility can be difficult to diagnose.
Hormone therapy is the first step in most IVF treatments, as it stimulates the growth of many follicles in the ovary. These are gathered as eggs, and multiple embryos are created by fertilizing the eggs "in vitro" in a test tube. One or two of these embryos are moved from the vagina to the uterus, where they are implanted and the process of pregnancy starts, after spending up to five days in an incubator. Not all embryos implanted via IVF, like in natural conception, result in pregnancy. For this reason, extra embryos are preserved in case the initial embryo fails and the process needs to be repeated.
The most common procedure performed by IVF specialist is: IVF
